外国字谜

《外国字谜》的译文都没有逐字逐句直译，而按照它的文意改写为中式字谜。以适应少年儿童的年龄特征。

【1】What is it that， by losing an eye，

has only a nose left？——打一英语单词一只眼睛遗失，

只留一个鼻子， 这是什么英语字？

谜底：NOISE（噪音）。在英语中，i 主 eye（眼睛）的发音是相同的， 丢了一只眼睛，意思就是少了一个 i，把 i 加在留下的一个鼻子（nose）上， 就揭到谜底了。

【2】What is a word of fifteen letters

from which you can subtract

twelve and leave ten？ ——打一英语单词十五个字母排起来，

排成单词要你猜。

去掉十二还剩“十”， 你看这词怪不怪？

谜底： PRETENTIOUSNESS（自命不凡，夸夸其谈）。它由十五个字母组成，前后去掉十二字母，剩下的恰巧是基数词 ten（10）三个字母。
